Review: Witchblade (2001)

Not to mention the series...

Being a fan of Yancy Butler and an occasional reader of the Comics, I of course had to see this movie. My expectations weren't very high, since most comic adaptations at that time hadn't been very convincing, and because the TV movie turned the Witchblade into a metal glove with knight's armor.

Boy was I in for a surprise. Yancy Butler once again proved that she really can act, if you only let her, and played a convincingly ambivalent tough/fragile police officer. The director/camera man capture the story in innovative shots and images. Only the Matrix-effect was rather jarring, but luckily was only used once never to be seen again in the TV series.

Und erst die Serie...

Als Yancy Butler-Fan und Gelegenheitsleser des Comics musste ich diesen Film natürlich sehen. Meine Erwartungen waren nicht sonderlich gross, da ich in letzter Zeit überwiegend schlechte Comicadaptionen gesehen hatte, und da der Film die Witchblade zu einem Metallhandschuh mit Ritterrüstung reduziert hat.

Ich war positiv überrascht. Yancy Butler beweist hier erneut, dass sie schauspielern kann, wenn man sie nur lässt, und spielt überzeugend die ambivalent schwach/starke Polizistin, und der Regisseur/Kameramann fängt in innovativen Bildern die Handlung ein. Nur der Matrix-Effekt stört ein wenig, kommt aber nur einmal vor und wird in der Serie endgültig eingemottet.
