Dr. Mabuse Rights Sold / Dr. Mabuse-Rechte verkauft!

Ich war ja schon seit Ewigkeiten der Meinung, dass Doktor Mabuse ein Remake verdient hat. Nicht die langweiligen 60er-Jahre-Filme, sondern die Buchvorlage, die einfach spitze ist. Sieht aus, als hätte sich Anfang des Jahres 2008 Universum die Filmrechte am Mabuse gesichert, und laut IMDB und Cinetrend wird der Mabuse 2009 produziert und Dr. Mabuse kommt dann 2010 vor unsere Augen. Auch Universum hat eine Pressemeldung zum Mabuse.

Gut, die 60er-Jahre-Firma CCC hat immer noch ihre Finger im Spiel, aber es sieht aus, als hätte die Produktionsfirma Rat Pack die richtige Idee, das ganze als großen Thriller mit Zeitanspielungen zu planen. Wenn man sich Norbert Jacques' Notizen zum nie vollendeten Mabuses Kolonie / N.J. sucht Kristina ansieht, sieht man, dass das auch seine Arbeitsweise war. Er schlägt dort sogar vor, die Details neueren Ereignissen anzupassen, wenn welche eintreten, bevor das Buch veröffentlicht wird.

Ich hoffe ja, dass die Autoren auch die späteren Bücher lesen, und das Ganze so auslegen, dass zukünftige Stories auch schon vorbereitet werden. Ich wünsche mir nämlich, dass Mabuse eine riesige Erfolgsserie wird, und sie im Stile von Jacques eine Weile weitermachen. Und wenn das Ding im Kino läuft, dann wird das wohl eine der seltenen Gelegenheiten, wo ich zur Premiere will.

Hmmm... warte mal, das ist die Produktionsfirma von Hui Buh und so, sitzen die auch hier in München? Dann könnte die Premiere etwas teuer werden ... hmmm... naja, einmal im Leben kann man's ja machen :-)

Nur schade, dass sie die Gelegenheit der Euro-Umstellung verpasst haben, das hätte so gut für die Inflationsstimmung der Weimarer Republik herhalten können, und wäre dann auch noch zeit-aktuell gewesen.

Update: Sieht aus, als wären sie gerade rechtzeitig. Mit der "Wirtschaftskrise" wird der Film wohl deutlich zeitaktueller, als selbst meine Euro-Idee es hätte erreichen können. Die jetzige Situation ist sogar internationaler als die Weimarer Republik, könnte also auch f]uuml;r Erfolg im Ausland sorgen. Der Gedanke ist ein wenig makaber, aber wäre schön, wenn aus dieser ganzen Geschichte zumindest eine gute Mabuse-Filmreihe herauskommt.

English Version

I have previously shared my opinion here that German crime movie classic Doctor Mabuse deserves a remake. Not those boring 60ies movies (which tried to cash in on the success of a very popular series of German Edgar Wallace movies), but rather the novel source material, which is simply exceptional. Looks like Universum Film acquired the rights to the story in early 2008. In addition, Cinetrend reports it will go into production in 2009, and IMDB indicates Mabuse will return to theatres in 2010. There's even a press statement on Dr. Mabuse from Universum themselves.

Even though 60ies cheap movie factory CCC is still involved, it seems that the production company, Rat Pack, has the right idea: They're planning it as a big thriller, set in current times and with current sensibilities. If you look at Norbert Jacques' notes to his unfinished work Mabuse's Colony / N.J. searching for Kristina, that is evidently the same way the author of the original material worked. There's even a note to change some of the details to match current events that may arise before the book goes to print.

I am hoping that the writers of the movie also read the later books, and plot everything so they can already foreshadow the sequels, and everything flows nicely. I would love for Mabuse to become a successful movie series in the style of Jacques' books that goes on for a few installments. And when it hits cinemas, this seems like that one exceptional occasion where I'd actually want to see it on the premier showing.

Hmmm... that reminds me... the production company also did Hui Buh, Die Welle and a few other recent German movies... aren't they here in Munich? That could mean that might be a slightly bigger and more expensive premiere. Well, it's a once-in-a-lifetime occasion, I guess. :-)

Too bad that they missed the occasion of the introduction of the Euro. The Weimar Republic inflation motif would have easily transferred to that and would have made it even more rooted in current events.

Update: Looks as if they're just on time. With the current climate of economic crisis, the situation is even closer in feeling than my Euro-idea. And considering the current crisis is more international than that of 20ies Germany, it bodes well for international success of the movie. I admit the thought is a bit macabre, but if a good Mabuse movie series comes out of all this, that's at least a small silver lining.
